Bend's Eaton smashes record

Ashton Eaton, a University of Oregon senior and a 2006 graduate of Bend's Mountain View High School, obliterated a 17-year-old record, held by Dan O'Brien, in the indoor heptathlon at the NCAA indoor championships at Fayetteville, Ark.

He successfully defended his title there and is also the NCAA's back-to-back decathlon champion.

In high school, Eaton nearly won, singlehandedly, the state title track-and-field title for Mountain View. They would have won if the coaches hadn't left him off an event. The school placed second.

Congratulations on a remarkable achievement.

So, do you know how many events are in a heptathlon?

You got it. Lucky number 7.

By the way, Oregon's women team won its first indoor championships. Oregon's men tied for second.
